Clash of the Titans
Well, it certainly was loud. I can't really give this a glowing review in any respect other than that. It's rare when a movie doesn't capture my attention or make me give a hoot about any of the characters in any way shape or form. I loved the original movie and had high hopes that they would keep the same basic story only make it better. Well, they the story was basically worse, but boy did they do their best to jazz up the visuals. It seemed like they thought about giant CG battles with the smallest amount of story to get the characters to those scenes. And I must say that when your main bad guy (played by Ralph Fiennes) makes you laugh every time he's on the screen, that doesn't bode well for the seriousness of your film. Just about everything fell flat for me. The Gods were severely under used and they didn't even make me like the main character. It seemed very paint by numbers with no heart. Sad, just sad. |

2012
Roland Emmerich continues his assault on the planet and our senses. This time with the global destruction via the end of the Mayan calendar... and John Cusack?. While there were many entertaining escape from peril driving sequences, and a crazy Woody Harrelson, it ran a little long. Otherwise it was relatively enjoyable as a mindless, effect heavy, action kaboom flick. |

Surrogates
I love Bruce Willis. He is by far one of my favorite actors, so I'll watch just about anything he does, and sometimes we get "Oh, Bruce…" stuff like this. Surrogates was a good idea but not nearly as flushed out as it should have been. At a mere 88 minutes long we get a very rushed and rather messy movie. The plot of "this is what will happen to humanity if we continue our non-personal relationships with technology" felt more like a preachy one dimensional action flick than a drilling into more of the pros and cons broader view of the implications of such a society (comparable to The Island from Michael Bay). But then again, this was given to us from the guy responsible for T3, so what more could I really expect. |

Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, The
Saw this movie at a $1 theater. Eh, it was OK. I'm not sure why John Travolta has been so keen on playing a bad guy so often in the last 10 years. He may have looked more the part in this rather than say "The Punisher", but I have a hard time listening to that voice say the F word convincingly. Denzel was great as usual spending most of his time behind a desk talking to Mr. Travolta, in this is fourth film with director Tony Scott. It does make me want to see the original, because remakes are never as good; and I understand the first one to be quite good. |

Inglourious Basterds
QT puts his spin on WWII movies, making his best movie in the last 10+ years. Filled with great tense dialog and one of the best openings to any movie I've seen in a long time. Christoph Waltz steals the movie as the "Jew Hunter" Nazi Colonel, I might even dare to suggest an Oscar nomination wouldn't be out of the question. This is how the war should have ended, with film rolling and fire burning... and Brad Pitt with a bowie knife and thick TN accent. |

District 9
A refreshing take on aliens and humanity. First time director Neill Blomkamp give us a great sci-fi / horror / thriller / drama / comedy. Awesome CGI complements the story very well and delivers some of the best aliens the big screen has ever seen. The complex story gives us plenty of action and entertainment while massaging our brains with deeper implications. Sharlto Copley's acting debut as Wikus does an outstanding and multilayered job as well. I'm looking forward to what Neill has in store for us in the future! |

(500) Days of Summer
It's important to know up front that this is not a love story... 500 Days of Summer is a wonderfully sour comedy about the heartache and pain of relationships. I laughed more in this movie than at many straight up comedies because we have all (well, most of us - and if you haven't you probably will) gone through some sort of relationship in our lives that was bittersweet that wound up leading us to our eventual cardiac destruction and subsequent revival in a better relationship because of it. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel were absolute perfection in this. It was a wonderful film for my wife and I on our 6th anniversary, like a reaffirmation of how sweet and perfect our relationship is, in spite of and because of our tumultuous pasts. |

Proposal, The
Our second film on our 6th anniversary (a fitting film title I thought) was this "romantic" "comedy" with Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds about a boss’s selfish scheme to avoid deportation to Canada by forcing her assistant to bail her out by way of marriage. Whenever I watch a romantic comedy these days I've come to always expect one of 2-3 formulas and this one was no exception. Two people who have a strained platonic or otherwise relationship are forced to deal with each other on a more personal level, high jinks / one or two touching moments / and eventual misunderstanding lead to romantic makeup and all live happily ever after. As that formula goes, this one did a pretty mediocre job, but its two leads strong presences lifted it above average. It was a nice light end to our date and gave us a couple of chuckles. |

Watchmen
I had just read the graphic novel a few days before seeing the highly anticipated screen adaptation by 300 director Zack Snyder, so I could be familiar with the celebrated original source. I must say the novel is indeed one of the best books I've ever read. I had a great message about war and the importance of human life. So I was even more jazzed about seeing the film than I had before reading it. I must say that the movie followed the novel very closely if not exactly in dialogue and direction. Most of the casing was spot on, Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach was spot on, and Patrick Wilson did very well as the Night Owl. I will say I was mostly disappointed by how they handled Dr. Manhattan, not due to Billy Crudup performance necessarily, but just in effects and tone, and Matthew Goode was a horrible Ozymandias, and those are two of the most important characters. Otherwise I enjoyed the film very much up until the end. I do wish they had not changed the major plot element that ended the movie (giant squid) which was quite a letdown. With those few things aside, Zack Snyder was a great choice for a director, with his treatment of 300 (and obvious nod to that film at the beginning of this one with the door number) he showed he could handle the adaptation of graphic novels to the screen with a great deal of care and accuracy. I'll give it an 8/10. |

The Coen Brothers bang out another great comedy. After their latest attempts of comedy with The Ladykillers and Intolerable Cruelty, I was a bit worried they had lost their comedy chops a bit; but they've returned to great form with this one. It started off very promising and the "twist" kind of ruined what the film could have been for me. The Dark Knight is one of the best superhero/comic films ever made. It was full of excellent performances, a great script and directed by a great filmmaker still at the beginning of his career (this is, after all, only Christopher Nolan's 6th movie). Heath Ledger’s performance as the Joker definitely stole the show. One of the few sequels to surpass in first film in greatness, a feat even more exceptional considering the quality of the first. I can't wait for the next installment, I pray all players remain involved. |

Iron Man was built for Robert Downey Jr.; and helmed superbly by Jon Favreau. It was a smart, fun, action-filled thrill-ride. I would put it up there with Spider-Man and Batman Begins as far as class and enjoyment. I can't say I was surprised by much as I was a few steps ahead of the film at every turn; but it is a comic book movie, not an original thriller, so I forgave it for that. This was Marvel Studios' first self-financed movie, which gives more hope to it's future endeavors like The Incredible Hulk coming out later this month. With more more control it looks like they can crank out some very faithful flicks. I'm ready for Iron Man 2. |

War
First off, let me proclaim that I am a big time fan of Jet Li. Hell, my kids middle name is Li, so that should give you some sort of idea as to why I saw this movie. Jason Statham tends to be a name that adds instant kickassness credibility to any film, so then there's that too. So we have War, a movie that contains too great action dudes, who's last movie they were in together was pretty darn entertaining (The One). First off, I wasn't expecting much, but when it comes to Jet Li and Jason Statham I have come to at least expect some great hand to hand fight scenes of which this contains very little. Instead they both have guns and do lots of shooting (after all, that's what guns to best). The plot wasn't anything too new, lone gunman type pits two rival gangs against one another for his gain (Fistful of Dollars). You knew what was going to happen at every turn, however the final twists I didn't see coming, a plot device that seems to be the norm in todays movies, rather than keeping to the expected outcome. Anyway, all this to simply say it was OK. No real "ooooh, ahhhh" moments, but the action was a plenty and the plot did keep you involved. Being a Jet Li flick this will soon join the ranks of my collection, but it will probably be near the end of my action-to-see list. |

Transformers
Saw it on the IMAX! It was good. The CGI was incredible. The plot was OK. My main three complaints (if they weren't an issue it would have been a very good movie) were that ALL the action was shot way too close, it was like watching the superbowl on the sideline through a telescopic lens. Secondly was Frenzy, the little Decepticon, it was the Jar Jar of Transformers, highly irritating. Lastly was Megatron, he was very underused and his fight with Optimus was quite pitiful as #1 good guy vs #1 bad guy fights go. Other than that, I got chills from seeing a 'real' Optimus Prime and one of my favorite childhood toys/tv shows translated to the big screen. |

That said, in it's own respect, a very good film with lots of room to grow. As for the 3D, my only complaint is that there wasn't enough. I was really hoping to see those great opening titles in 3D, as well as a couple of other scenes. Otherwise, it was pretty cool and just a nice extra kick to the film. Superman Returns
I recently watched the original and the 2nd Superman movies to 'gear-up' for the latest installment by Brian Singer. Taking place 5 years after the end of Superman II, he returns to find things have changed. I loved this movie. It was almost perfect. I'm not going to give anything away, other than saying that this was an excellent continuation from the original Superman movies which I was a huge fan. I will always remember Christopher Reeves as Superman, and newcomer Brandon Routh fill his shoes very well. You can definitely tell that Singer was a fan of the original series from the very beginning, with tons of homage's to the Donner films. The only issue I had with it was the pacing. It seemed noticeably slow (even though I never lost interest); it just seemed to take a little more time than necessary to setup many of the scenes. I'm very much a "can't get enough of a good thing" kind of guy, so it's not a huge complaint. That small thing aside, I'm hoping to see this film again in the IMAX to experience the greatness of the 3-D and the Man of Steel himself. |

X-Men: The Last Stand
I have been looking forward to the third installment of the X-Men Trilogy from the moment I walked out of the theater from watching the marvelous X2 movie. I was worried about things when I learned that Brian Singer wasn't going to be directing the 3rd movie, but was very excited to hear he would be directing Superman. But, back to this movie, Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, Red Dragon) inherited this project, and I must admit that the trailers for the movie made me very excited about it. I did like the movie, but it was a bit of an empty enjoyment; which is the usual trend with Hollywood movies. Growing up reading the comics I loved the engrossing stories and history of each of the characters; which is why I liked the first 2 so much. I realize the case could be made that the first 2 movies took care of the back stories enough that we could move on to a special effects / action blockbuster flick, which is what this was. I just wonder what could have been if Mr. Singer had helmed this one. |

Mission: Impossible III
I've been looking forward to seeing this since I heard J.J. Abrams (Felicity, Alias, Lost), was taking the directing duties for this 3rd installment. I was already excited when I heard they were going thought with another one. Tom hasn't been the most popular guy since expressing his feelings and views publicly (jumping on couches and calling Matt Lauer glib); but, I have always been a fan of Mr. Cruise's movies and always will be, because he is a great entertainer. In MI3 he continues to do what he does best and I think this one is the best of the series. The story is centered on Ethan Hunt's new life/wife and he reluctantly, although willingly, gets involved in another impossible mission which gets his new life/wife involved (a very J.J. Abrams kind of plot). The movie never slows and remains easy to follow the whole way. Philip Seymour Hoffman is great as the bad guy; but, I did feel he was under used. Over all a very entertaining and fun thrill ride a great way to start the big blockbuster roller coaster for the year. |

V for Vendetta
V for Vendetta is a smart, seemingly political, thriller; full of ideas and questions for you to form your own opinions about. The movie flowed smoothly and beautifully from beginning to end; well directed and wonderful acting form Natalie Portman and the voice/body of Hugo Weaving behind the mask, backed well with brilliant supporting characters. The plot and dialog were well written by the Wachowski brothers, which reminded me of the first Matrix's thought provoking ideologies. **Spoilers below** There were several interesting subplots to this movie but the main idea is about not so much an existing 'government' ruling by fear than about a dictator (Adam Sutler played by John Hurt, of interesting note, played Winston Smith in the movie version of Orwell's 1984) that foraged his way to power by means of fear and terrorism that he created, in order necessitate his protection and control over the people. V is one of the subjects of Sutlers plot to find a cure for a virus that he created for the means to release on the people of Britain and blaming it on terrorist groups so he could use that fear to facilitate his rise to power; all the while making himself and his associates rich by taking stock in the pharmaceutical company that 'miraculously' finds a cure for the virus directly after his seize of power. V is the cure to the virus; who escapes the destruction of the facility where the experiments took place. V uses the anniversary of Guy Fawkes, who on a Nov. 5th in reality was part of a Catholic plot to destroy the English parliament, as his backdrop of (and the face of) his actions. V's motives are driven by a vendetta for revenge on those that tortured him and others like him in the facility he was held captive (of which he is in cell Roman numeral V). He starts things off by getting the publics attention by blowing up old baileys. Sutler spins things in the media to keep control of things until V takes control of the media himself to claim responsibility for his actions, as well as raise questions about the current government (which has imposed curfews, raised borders, and taken away freedoms and culture in the name of protection). V gives the people a one year engagement to meet at parliament if they feel the same as he does (on Nov. the 5th, of course). On V's path of vengeance he rescues Evey (Portman) at the hands of Sutlers seedy fingermen. V takes it upon himself to help Evey understand his plight and free her from her fears. I could go on, but you've just got to see the movie for yourself for cripes sake... There is a lot more plot than action (although there is plenty of it), which makes this flick worthy of the attention it will no doubt get. It's very thought provoking and well done. |

Brokeback Mountain
When I first heard that Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal had signed up for an Ang Lee 'gay cowboy' movie, my initial reaction was that of probably most people: "Who would watch something like that?'. As the movie slowly made its way through festivals and began getting excellent reviews, I began reading about it and opened up to the idea a little more. After all, regardless of what your views are on homosexuality, everyone can relate to a story about love; and after all, remember that this is just a movie; it's not some sort of 'gay agenda' film. It's a love story about two people with a love that they can not control regardless of their pasts and current circumstances. As a movie, it was one of the post powerful love stories I have every seen on the screen about these two people's complicated lives who try so desperately to hide their love from everyone around them, and how Heath's character struggles with the his own past and acceptance of his own feelings. Someone who is so closed up emotionally that it show in him physically and in his relationships with his wife and daughters (superbly acted by Ledger). After all is said and done this story is all about the difficulties of relationships that are complicated by external and internal conflicts and accepting yourself before it's too late. |

Syriana
Geez, where do I begin... I wouldn't say this is a bad movie, I wouldn't say it was a good movie either. It certainly has an interesting plot at its core and many interesting characters. It was almost like watching a brilliant architect begin to sketch out an idea while explaining to you his grand design which you kind of get the gist of, but his verbal expressions are just as sporadic and incomplete as the sketch he's drawing. If you are equally intrigued as you are confused by that analogy then you've just experienced Syriana. The general plot revolves around all the politics, corruption, power, and worldwide implications of the oil industry. The performances where good, and the story was a giant web of complexly woven interesting plots; and I definitely suggest that your in the mood for a story that requires your full attention or it will lose you just as quickly as it could engross you. |

King Kong
Superspectacfabstumazingous! I had purchased an 8:00 showing for Kong on Fandango; but, we got to the theater at 7:15 and there was a 7:25 showing that we snuck into because I couldn't sit around and wait another 45 minutes. First let me say something about the length of the film. I realize that 3 hours is a long time to commit to watching a movie, especially with the never-ending trailers and commercials at the beginning of films (don't get me started on those...), and that by having longer films you reduce the number of shows that can be sold; with all that said, when the film is worth it, the people will watch it. Least we forget that Titanic, the largest grossing movie of all time ran 3 hours 14 minutes, and the Lord of the Rings films that Jackson helmed also ran over 3 hours, were huge box office smashes. When a filmmaker as talented as Jackson has proved himself 3 times in a row that he can make a box office and critically acclaimed giant; just sit back, shut up, and enjoy the show. So, that's exactly what I did. The first act of the film that set up the story was engrossing without being too slowly paced; it definitely helped build the anticipation of arriving on Skull Island. I had the feeling like you get when you're on a roller coaster hearing the clinking of metal under your seat as your hoisted higher and higher enjoying the view and soaking it all in before being plummeted into an adrenaline rush of nonstop action and entertainment. Once arriving, or rather, crashing into the island the movie begins it's frenzied journey of inevitability. I couldn't divert my eyes or my attention from the screen for the next 2 hours. I was amazed at the detail and realism of Kong, thanks in big part to the talent of Andy Serkis. Jack Black and Adrien Brody were great in their repected roles; and Naomi Watts was spectacular given that the majority of her scenes required her to communicate without words. What I found most unexpected was that even though I knew what was coming every step of the way, I managed to be surprised at every turn. You can feel the love that Jackson has for this legend with every wonderful moment; and his ability to tell this beloved story to people that already know it and make them love and enjoy it again is a momentous achievement. |

Walk the Line
From the little I know about Johnny Cash, Joaquin Phoenix portrayed him excellently. The film itself was very entertaining and enthralling. Reese Witherspoon also did a great job as June Carter. Considering Joaquin and Resse both sang and played every song themselves with no dubbing, that makes their performances shine even greater in brilliance. |

Derailed
A predicable but entertaining thriller. Well acted by all players and keeps good pacing; with some surprise twists. |

North Country
A great emotional performance by Charlize Theron, with a good script about standing up for what is right in the face of much criticism and adversity. Excellent supporting cast all around. Even thought the film is full of tough subject matter, it still manages to be uplifting. Seems Theron is turning out to be quite the excellent dramatic actress. |

Flightplan
The first hour or so is spine-tingling to watch. Jodie Foster gives her usual gripping and emotional passionate performance, which is worth the price of admission alone. Just when you think you may have this psychological thriller figured out it takes a turn to a reality biting suspense film. Like the last thriller in the sky (Red-Eye), this one starts very strong, then fails to meet the starting expectations; but, a good solid film non-the-less. |

40-Year-Old-Virgin, The
This film was absolutely hilarious. I was very impressed with Steve Carell. I thought that the virgin thing might get stale; but, it was played out so well by Carell and the rest of the boys that I couldn't get enough. I cringed with absolute awkwardly horrifying comedic terror for most of the movie. Bordering on very offensive but falling on sweet romantic fun. (On a related note, my wife found it to have fallen on the more offensive and too awkward side... I think my being a guy may have proved to be a more sympathetic and relatable stance) |

Constant Gardener, The
Decided to watch this movie instead of The 40-Year-Old Virgin. Big mistake. I had high hopes for it, but was severely disappointed. I may have walked out of 2 movies in my entire life; and this was one of them. I usually go to a movie to get away, be entertained, or laugh. In CG I almost fell asleep in the first 10 minutes, and basically just didn't care. Maybe the end of the movie was good, I won't know, we walked out about an hour into it, which was about 40 minutes more than I wanted to give it. The performances were good, but the direction and story did me in. Blah. What a way to waste part of a birthday. |

Red Eye
Predictable at the end, but excellent first hour. Unfortunately the end of the movie was cheapened a little by the several preteen scream queens in the front of the theater that where frighteningly shrieking at the height of the terror; and you couldn't help but chuckle at their full body spasms as they tried to hide their faces into their fellow screaming friends arms, instead of watching the screen and seeing what's happening. Otherwise worth the hour and half and 16 bucks. |

Mr. & Mrs. Smith
Kristy and I saw this as one of our 2 year anniversary events. It was a very poignant choice; as it was very humorous in poking fun at many marriage stereotypes. It was much more comedy than action (although there was plenty of that), which surprised us. It was a very well rounded and fun movie. |

Island, The
Kristy and I caught this flick while buying time waiting to pick up Molly from the groomers. I couldn't help but notice several similarities to The Matrix and Minority Report in this Sci-Fi thriller. I've always enjoyed Michael Bay action movies but have come to expect a certain mind numbing plot driven by the quickest route to the explosions. The Island started out more like a smart character driven thriller with high expectations, which halfway roared intensely back to an action blockbuster. It was a good premise with great actors to suck you into the story (Scarlett Johansson, Ewan McGregor, Djimon Hounsou, Sean Bean) and great effects/explosions to eradicated all remaining nerve endings to leave you forgetting about all the questions unanswered. |

War Of The Worlds
Despite being over saturated by Tom Cruise in the media; I enjoyed WOTW. Classic Spielberg moments in the film, like a great continuous camera movement sequence with a speeding van, and great stuff in the basement with Tim Robbins. I wouldn't put it anywhere near Spielberg's last one with Cruise, but entertaining none the less. |

Batman Begins
My wife and I showed up to the theater on our date night, on the opening day of Batman Begins, with the intention of watching Mr. & Mrs. Smith. I had to use the little boy's room so I ask Kristy to get the tickets for me. When I came out she told me that she wanted to surprise me by taking me to Batman. Does my wife ROCK or what... I've been excited about seeing this movie since I heard Christopher Nolan was directing and Christian Bale was donning the cape. What guy doesn't fascinate about being the Caped Crusader, one of the few superheroes without superpowers who fights extraordinary human villains; which makes him more vulnerable and closer to reality. That's what Batman Begins brings back to the franchise. Even the Tim Burton Batman's (Let not even talk about the others...) had elements of fantasy (hey, it is a comic book right); but, this movie is grounded closer to reality which makes it even better. Christian Bale was an excellent Batman, I hope that he continues the role in future flicks. The movie kept me on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next. It's the dark, gritty, fear facing, human Batman I've been waiting for. I'm not going to say this movie was perfect (I don't like pointing out all the little things wrong with movies, what do you think I am... a critic?), but it has definitely restored my childhood imagination of the possibility of being a superhero and my faith in the Batman franchise. |

Star Wars Episode III - Revenge Of The Sith
It was everything it was hyped up to be. Some of the dialog was a little less than great (to be expected); but, who goes to see Star Wars for the dialog. The action was nice, I actually forgot I was watching tons of special effects for a while and was tied up in the story; which unites the new trilogy to the older one very well. I would definitely put it next to V as one of the best of the series. It was very dark and explained Anakin's fall to the dark side very well. Ian McDiarmid was great as the Emperor, and of course Yoda rocks, SO much better than that rubber freak from EP I, and further developed than EP II. I'll be seeing it again in a few more days, and I can't wait for a second helping. |

Crash
Great. Even though Sandra Bullock is getting the top billing in this movie (small, but, integral role); it's all Don Cheadle, Matt Dillon, Terrence DaShon Howard, and Ludacris. Yes, I said Ludacris. They are all are outstanding with a great surrounding cast and well told story. About several different people whose lives intertwine in two days in L.A. An interesting look at racial relations and all the things we think about but don't talk about. |

Sin City
Excellent. It was beautifully done. Mickey Rourke was the stand out in this film, who knew. Bruce, Clive, Benicio, and Jessica were great too. Robert Rodriguez did a great job. I had never heard of Frank Miller before this movie; but, from everything that I've seen of his novels since seeing the movie I can tell they put a lot of work and thought into it. |

Closer
An excellent drama about sex, trust, relationships, and love. I'm not usually much for these kind of movies, but this one drew me in from the opening scene and carried my all the way through to the end. Very well written, acted, and directed. Oh yeah, Natalie Portman is hot, that helps. |

My first movie in the theater in too long. The Incredibles was just awesome. I'd rank it just a shave under Finding Nemo. Good stuff, a bit more on the adult side than the kiddy side. See it! |
